Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery reduces the size of breasts and excess weight that leads to symptoms such as back, neck or shoulder pain. It also restores the overall shape of the breasts and places the nipple/areola back in a more natural position.
Breast reduction could benefit you if you have:
- Back, neck or shoulder pain due to breast size and weight
- Limits on your ability to exercise due to breast size and weight
- Skin irritations or rashes beneath your breasts, especially during the summer
- Indentations in your shoulders from the bra straps
- Large breasts with nipples and areolas that lie low on the breast or feel your breasts are out of proportion to your body

Surgical Technique
There are many breast reduction techniques. All techniques remove breast tissue to reduce breast weight and reduce symptoms caused by larger breasts. They also address nipple and areola position.
The most common method to reduce breast size involves three incisions. One incision is made around the areola. Another runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease underneath the breast. The third incision follows the natural curve of the breast crease. Dr. Mitchell commonly performs breast reductions without the horizontal scar (i.e., the vertical breast reduction). In addition, he uses the latest techniques of internal breast reshaping to give the best possible breast contour and longest lasting result.
Breast reduction surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight hospital stay. All sutures are placed internally to avoid painful suture removals. Some bruising and swelling can be expected. This usually lasts only a couple weeks.
With all procedures, the breasts may appear to sit initially high on the chest, but will lower during the first month into a natural breast contour. Recovery is excellent and most women return to normal activities within a few weeks.
