Over time, deep wrinkles can develop within our face. In the past, surgery or facial resurfacing procedures offered the only solutions to help soften the wrinkles we develop over time. Now, other options are available. Injectable fillers are products that have been developed to help “plump up” and soften the wrinkles on our face to improve appearance.
Juvéderm injectable gel (including Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, Juvéderm Ultra XC, Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC, and Juvéderm Voluma) is a “next generation” hyaluronic dermal filler developed by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX. It is used to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds (such as those around the nose and mouth).
Juvéderm is safe. It consists of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in all of our skin. Injected within the mid-to-deep dermis of the skin, the product attracts water and helps fill out the natural wrinkles within our skin. Unlike other filler products like collagen, no skin testing is necessary.
Juvéderm is not permanent. Natural enzymes within our body called hyaluronidases will slowly break down the product. Results vary; however, Juvéderm is the only hyaluronic acid filler FDA approved to last up to one year with initial treatment.
Juvéderm is a simple, in-office procedure. It now comes pre-mixed with lidocaine to help reduce discomfort with the procedure. Side effects were usually mild to moderate, lasting seven days or less, and included temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, pain, firmness, swelling and bumps. Juvéderm is not for people with severe allergies.
