Q: What are the different procedures to achieve a flat, smooth, firm stomach?
A: There are two options to achieve this result:
- Abdominoplasty – which is the traditional ‘tummy tuck’ surgery that removes fat and excess skin, and also restores weakened abdominal muscles
- Lipoabdomoplasty – this is a newer procedure that Dr. Cassidy Mitchell has performed for over 10 years. It is combination between traditional surgery and liposuction. The advantage of this procedure is that it offers improved contouring of the stomach
These surgical procedures offer the greatest control over the outcome and a more pleasing result in terms of creating a smooth and firm abdominal profile (i.e., flat stomach).
Q: What about liposuction?
A: Liposuction removes fat below the skin, but the skin remains. The skin will tighten some but it is sometimes hard to determine how much the skin will tighten. Liposuction does not address or strengthen abdominal muscles.
Q: Where there be a scar as a result of this procedure?
A: There will be a scar, however, it will be below your belly button. It is Dr. Mitchell’s experience that scars for this procedure heal well and become less visible over time.
Q: Will this procedure help me lose weight?
A: This is not a weight loss procedure. It is sometimes performed after significant weight loss to remove excess skin, strengthen abdominal muscles and create a flat, smooth stomach.
Q: What is the ideal time to have this procedure?
A: The ideal time is when you are at a stable weight and no longer plan to have children.
Q: How long does it take to recover?
A: When you return to work depends on the type of work you do – generally a person can return to work in two weeks. You will be instructed not to lift more than 10 pounds for six weeks following the procedure.
Q: How long before I can show off my results in a swimsuit?
A: In only about two months, you can slip into your two-piece swimsuit and show off your new flat stomach! You can wear your one-piece suit even sooner.
